Primitive leatherworking stool
Tanning stool used in traditional leatherworking in Morocco. Made in solid walnut wood, the three legs provide stability on uneven surfaces, common in traditional workshops in the old medinas. The wood has taken on a worn and stained patina over time due to contact with the tanning solutions (lime, dyes, natural tannins from plants) and the hides themselves.
In Morocco, leatherworking is an ancient and highly skilled craft, particularly in cities like Marrakesh, Fez, and Meknes, where tanneries have existed for centuries. This tanning stool represents a tangible link to Morocco's rich artisanal heritage and the traditional methods of leather production that have been passed down through generations.
